The Uhrsleben truckstop located west of Magdeburg on the A2, Exit 65, very popular among truck drivers, is setting new security standards for truck parking lots in Germany. Beginning in the autumn a new section has been added to the normal parking lot which offers enhanced security for vehicles containing precious cargo.
According to a European Union study, 90,000 truck drivers are victims of crime annually. Experts estimate that the resulting losses add up to over eight billion euros. Vehicles loaded with expensive cargo are especially at risk. This is why a network of high-security parking lots is planned in Europe; Uhrsleben is one of this project's pilot sites.
The grounds are cordoned off by a special fence and policed by security patrols and cameras. The driver of each truck is personally checked-in, and the vehicle is recorded, sealed and registered with the help of digital images. Criminalists and insurance specialists were included in the overall project.
For a long break for up to 24 hours the service costs 25 euros, for short-term parkers, 3.50 euros per hour. On the plus side, some insurers are already offering discounts on premiums if the risk of major losses is reduced by using this new security service. Moreover, instead of being parked on some isolated spot, the drivers here can take advantage of all the services offered by the truckstop.
